More than a haircut
GLORY!

Bibbo (bee=B9 boe). On San Francisco=B9s Union square is a salon where I get my
hair edited. The shop is named Bibbo and so is the owner. I began with
Bibbo, himself, cutting my hair. One day, he was visiting his native Brazil
and I was placed in the magical hands of Yasuyo, a delightful Japanese woma=
n
who takes pampering to new heights. She has been =B3handling=B2 me for a year
now. A few weeks back, Yasuyo was gone and Bibbo was her back up. The salon
was uncharacteristically quiet that day, Bibbo and I were not. He is always
engaging, effusive, efulgent, and encouraging. Having Bibbo cut your
hair--at which he is a master--is merely an excuse for being in his
presence. He ALWAYS makes me feel good about myself. =B3Delightful to
see you, McNair=B2 He will exclaim from across the room. Sitting in his
station he I ask who some of his more fascination clients were. =B3The other
day,=B2 Bibbo began quickly as though he=B9d rehearsed his answer. =B3A very
wealth woman, who I have worked with for many years came in wearing a hat
and dark glasses. She sat without speaking to any of my staff.=B2 He stopped
to get my attention and make a funny face. I=B9d call it =8Cpuckered.=B9 Bibbo
continued, =B3I don=B9t want to talk to anyone today, just cut my hair and leav=
e
me alone. This was a big announcement she is making to me.=B2 Again with the
puckered face.
=B3But who is she to come to my salon with so much negativity, to
ignore my staff, and be so bossy and mean spirited?=B2 Then, placing his open
hand, with fingers stretched apart to make his hand even bigger, Bibbo
placed his hand on his chest and proclaim with ferocious passion, =B3But I
came here with GLORY in me to share with everyone. You have no right to sto=
p
me from fill the world with the reason I was put on earth!=B2
As my eyes welled up with tears I smiled from ear-to-ear. Glory! is
precisely what I always received from Bibbo even he was not the one editing
my thick curls. Glory, it=B9s what we all exude when we consciously and
vibrantly pursue our dreams. Bibbo does that ever day as an employer, hair
stylist, husband and father or four beautiful children. He brings out my
glory and makes me want to continue doing it in others.
Two nights ago, my favorite waitress at Fog City Diner and I were
chatting about my Imaginuity work. =B3What do you do in your workshops?=B2
Asking for clarity.
=B3I assist folks in---well, let me ask you. If failure was not an
option and your rent and other expenses would be taken care of, what would
you like to be doing in your life, right now?=B2
=B3Acting.=B2 She barked quickly and almost defiantly as if to say.
=B3Well, DUH! You know, McNair, I want to act!=B2
=B3Great!=B2 I shot back. =B3So what are you willing to do to make that
happen--to have =8Cacting=B9 as the thing you do, primarily? What hard choices
and maybe personal sacrifices will you make to live your GLORY?=B2 Angela, of
course, asked about the =8Cglory=B9 reference and told about Bibbo and the angr=
y
client. Rather I stood and re-enacted Bibbo with hand on chest (=B3Glory in
me=B2) and then enormous, bravura gesture as he demonstrates sharing the glor=
y
with everyone.
=B3Are you ready to live your GLORY?=B2 We=B9re all waiting to see it.

Now Playing
McNair=B9s NEW One-Man Show! [No. 3 in a series]

THE FIFTH GOSPEL -my original one-man play (created in 1972) was performed
(by me) six times this past Summer. After 31 years and over 1400
performances I still enjoy it and so do audiences. When I created FROM UP
HERE in 1996 it quickly became the show I was doing most often. (Latest
performance 10/25, Lakewood Church, Koinonia Cafe, Houston).
A brand new piece has joined the McRepetoire: RAISED IN
CAPTIVITY-LIVE! Stories of a Life-Long Churchaholic. A performance version
of the stories, colorful characters and recollections in my new book of the
same title. In two performances last week at Bill Gather=B9s Praise Gathering
(600-800 each show) the audience laughed and later, through tears, thanked
me for releasing them from old =B3stuff=B2 dragged through lives lived in
=B3churchianity.=B2 Several pastors expressed their desire to =B3have all my
people hear your stories, McNair.=B2 One said, =B3Your words will heal a lot o=
f
people.=B2 A pastor and friend shared over a late meal. =B3This is an important
piece, McNair.=B2 During two one hour performances I used 90 minutes of
material--some repeated, some not--including stories NOT in the book.
Big Discount on Normal Honorarium! To get RAISED IN CAPTIVITY-LIVE!
out to the maximum number of people--quickly--we are offering a greatly
reduced honorarium for ANYONE booking Raised In Captivity-LIVE! between now
and the end of January 2004 if you are within a day=B9s drive of the Bay area
or a non-stop flight away from the SF Bay area. AND, schedule permitting, I
will throw in Sunday morning FREE to do a 5-7 minute preview of the show in
your AM services of the show to be performed that evening. Call Tim Grable
NOW [ 1-866-333-8663 ]before the Sunday you want is taken. How about a
"desert theatre" in with your church family inviting friends who used to go
to church, but are turned off or wounded. Raised in Captivity-LIVE! will
offer them another chance to be a part of God=B9s family. This is great for a
Friday and Saturday evening =B3date night=B2, desert theatre. Or set it up like
a comedy club with small tables, candles and munchies, soft drinks and
flavored coffees. This show has a real stand-up comedy feel to it, yet
filled with a cast of goofy, memorable church characters everyone will
recognize. Come early, get a good seat.

Good Night, Mr. Yaconelli
Saying Good-bye to a Friend

This past Wednesday , a long time friend, Mike Yaconelli, died in an auto
accident near his home in Yreka, California. The Summer of my twelfth year =
I
went to "Camp Rancho" at Forest Home. The two top wranglers were Wayne Rice
and Mike Yaconelli. Putting Wayne and Mike in charge of junior highers is
like turning the pharmacy over to drug addicts. While the camp slept we
goofed off in the camp office. Not long after we goofed off in the Youth
Specialties office in downtown San Diego. I'd been hired as art director of
their new mag--The Wittenburg Door. At Camp, on staff at The Door and in
thirty years of speaking and teaching at YS conventions Mike always
encourage me to be me. Yac's anger at churhianity, passion for youth
ministry and unrelenting pursuit of bristling faith-in-action have inspired
me for nearly FORTY years! Beneath Yac's ranting and the sarcasm was a
tender heart. He loved God, Karla (wife), his great kids, and life. Best of
all, Mike let us all be part of that life through his passionate teaching,
poetic writing and piercing wit. After tears I thanked our Creator for
sending us the "Prophet Yac" to rant and roar and bless our lives. His
sixty-one-derful years among us were grace-full! We have laughed to the
point of tears, late into many nights and I am proud to have called him
friend. More on all this at www.youthspecialties.com--news articles,
memorial services info and a forum--"Yaconelli Reflections"--where I posted
the following:

A Reading for the Prophet Mike

We tapped our feet to the music.
And Mike said, =B3Get up and dance!=B2
We stood and sang.=20
And Mike said, =B3Stand on your chairs and shout!=B2
We read our Bibles.
And Mike said, =B3Write your questions in the margins.=B2
We were confused by words from the pulpit.
    And Mike said, =B3Yell, Baloney.=B2
We sought Truth.
And Mike said, =B3Beats the hell out of me. Try this.=B2
We looked for fool proof methods for ministry.
And Mike said, =B3It=B9s gonna get messy around here.=B2
We asked God to help us when Jesus died.
And God said, =B3I will send another comforter, and Mike.=B2

Here ends the lesson.

C. McNair Wilson,
A follower of Jesus, and Mike

Messy wisdom=20
McMedia!

My friend Mike Yaconelli was a tenacious theologian who has pushed so many
of us to ask the harder questions of our faith. His books, Dangerous Wonder
and Messy Spirituality are both sturdy examinations of personal faith and a
valuable read for Christian believers, ardent seekers, and honest skeptics.
I have read both, twice, and will reread them again--soon. Join me inside
=B3Yac=B9s=B2 mind and heart. You will be changed.
